The Effects of Aroma Massage therapy on Post-Stroke Central Pain and Depression

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of aromatherapy and massage on post-stroke central pain and depression in order to suggest a basis for the development of nursing intervention programs for patients with post-stroke central pain and depression. A pre-experimental design method using one group pretest-posttest design was used, and the study was conducted with 20 patients with brain stroke who were receiving treatment at D Care Hospital in T area and both K Care Hospital and K Hospital in K area from January 16, 2006 to April 13, 2006. The subjects wore a aroma necklace containing an aroma oil and prepared massage. The SPSS Program(Version 12.0) was used to analyze the collected data. The results of this study are summarized as follows; 1. The pain score decreased significantly 5 weeks after application of aromatherapy massage(t=-7.71, p=0.001). 2. The pain score did not decrease significantly 11 weeks after application of aromatherapy massage(t=0.00, p=1.00). 3. The depression score decreased significantly 5 weeks after application of aromatherapy massage(t=-3.32, p=0.004). 4. The depression score did not decrease significantly 11 weeks after application of aromatherapy massage(t=1.08, p=0.294). The above results show that the aromatherapy massage is effective in alleviating central pain and depression of patients with brain stroke and that it can be used as an independent nursing
intervention in nursing practices.
